Sensual desire
This hindrance arises when the mind is captivated by positive emotions triggered by sensory experiences such as seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, or feeling. It leads to a distraction from the path and can become an obsession, hindering clarity of mind.
Ill will
This state of mind is characterized by negative emotions such as aversion, rejection, or dislike towards objects, situations, or people. It creates obstacles on the journey, making it unpleasant and potentially causing one to abandon their path.
Sloth and torpor
This hindrance involves the heaviness of the body and the dullness of the mind, often manifesting as sleepiness, lack of motivation, or even depression. It imprisons the individual, making it difficult to exert mental or physical effort to progress.
Restlessness
This hindrance is marked by an unsettled mind that struggles to remain in the present moment, constantly wandering into the future or dwelling on the past. It prevents clarity and makes it challenging to make decisions or take action.
Skeptical Doubt
This hindrance arises from indecisiveness and excessive doubt, leading to a disconnect between one's goals and actions. It causes confusion and hesitation, potentially halting progress on the journey towards clarity.
